About 17th International Biology Olympiad

PREFACE

The Biology Olympiad movement was initiated in India in 1999. The First Indian National Biology Olympiad (INBO) was held on 9th June, 1999, in 8 centres in the country. In July 2000, India participated for the first time in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). The 11th IBO was held at the beautiful sea resort, Antalya, in Turkey where Indian students made a mark by winning a silver and three bronze medals.
The team of four students was lead by Professor Bharat Chattoo of Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU). It was great achievement as the country participate for the first time and every team member secured a medal.
The young Indian biologists were :
-> Sahajal Dhooria from Jaipur – Silver medal -> Pallavi Torka from Ranchi – Bronze medal
-> Ashok S. from Chennai – Bronze medal -> Swati pandey from Rajasthan – Bronze medal

In a week-long competition in which about 150 students representing 38 countries took part in the Oympaid. Each country had to send four students, who were winners at their respective national competitions.
The 12th International Biology Olympiad was conducted in Brussels, Belgium and Indian students once again came out with flying colours by winning 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals. The prize winning students were :
-> Preetpaul Singh, Chandigarh, Gold Medal -> Sikhar Aggarwal, Bangalore, Gold Medal
-> Nilesh Chandra, Bhagalpur, Silver Medal -> Namrata Vijaya, Ajmer, Silver Medal.

All the above candidates are now pursuing MBBS courses in prestigious colleges of India. Preetpaul and Sikhar are in AIIMS whereas Nilesh is in Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi.
The Olympiad as the name suggests focussed on biology as a valuable subject. Many topics like ethology and ecology were covered, especially bio preservation and environmental protection. It offered opportunity to compare the syllabi and educational trends in the study of biology in different countries.
Olympiads are an annual event which tests the students knowledge and skill in various subjects. They also serves as a mean to win and sustain interest in the student by bringing in an element of competition.
Every year olympiads are conducted all over the world. Each country conducts its own olympiad. International Biology Olympiad has been around for a long time but only in 2000 India has gained a foothold in it, not only by sending a team but also winning laurels. International Biology Olympiads are testing grounds at international level where in a student/nation compares himself at international level.
This book will serve as an excellent resource for all those students aspiring to sit for Olympiads at both National and International level. It will also be very helpful for PMT aspirants especially in CBSE/AIIMS/AFMC/BHU/JIPMER and Karnataka/Manipal CETs.
This book will be single preparatory source for students preparing for National / International level olympiad in Biology.
This book published by MTG Books has been endorsed and recommended by Science Olympiad Foundation as an excellent resource book for the Olympiad exams. Science Olympiad Foundation is making intense efforts to locate and train such students and in coming years will train them for International Olympiads.
We hope you will benefit immensely from this book. We wish you all the best in your constant endeavour to further and deepen your knowledge of Biology. Students are welcome to send their comments/queries to Dr. Sandeep Ahlawat, Taj Aptts., Near Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi - 29 or mail him at mtg82@pcmbtoday.com
